Tips For Driving In Fog

Whether with a car hire or using your family car, we will all travel in foggy conditions at some stage. Here are a few useful tips you should remember when traveling in fog.

Fog lights should be used when visibility becomes poor but you are under no obligation to use them. This may vary according to the laws in whichever country you are travelling, so please check.  It may happen that if you are involved in an accident in foggy conditions without turning on your fog lights, there may be negative consequences in terms of any insurance claims.
Know exactly how and when to operate your fog lights. Remember that visibility can deteriorate rapidly within a few seconds. Always wait until visibility has improved considerably before turning off your fog lights. Never switch them on and off repeatedly as this can be a major distraction.
Some other tips for driving in fog

1. Use dipped headlights at all times. Also use your wipers and demisters.
2. Become familiar with front and rear headlights and know exactly how and when to use them.
3. If streetlights are lit, you may not need to use your fog lights.
4. Wind down your window at junctions with low visibility to listen for traffic. Move out if you are certain but do not hesitate for too long.
5. Leave a distance between yourself and the cars in front even though it may seem safer to tail the rear lights of those vehicles.
