russiaRussia is a magnificent and enormous country where car hire is probably your best option for getting around. Design your own perfect itinerary and create your personal Russian experience with the flexibility of car hire. It pays to learn a little about the rules of the road first, though:

  • Drive on the right.

  • You must be 18 to drive in Russia, but most car hire providers stipulate a minimum age of between 21 and 25 years.

  • All passengers must wear seatbelts.

  • Mobile phone use is restricted to hands-free devices.

  • Turning right at a red light is prohibited unless there is a green arrow traffic light.

  • Children must be at least 12 to travel in the front seat.

  • It is illegal to picking up hitchhikers.

  • You must use your dipped headlights during the day.

  • The car should contain a first-aid kit (preferably with latex gloves and a sterile syringe), a fire extinguisher, an emergency triangle sign, and a reflective vest.

  • Speed limits range from 60 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h on open roads, and 100 km/h on highways. Speeding fines range from 100 rubles for exceeding the limit by up to 20 km/h to 2,500 rubles for speeds in excess of 60 km/h over the limit. Your licence may also be revoked.

  • Toll roads are relatively uncommon. One example is the 18 Km section of the Lipetsk Highway M-4 from Moscow to Novorossiysk, where the toll is 10 rubles.

  • The legal blood/alcohol limit is zero.

  • Traffic police can stop a vehicle at any time to check documents. They may issue a ticket for a fine and keep your licence, but they must return your identity papers and the vehicle documentation.
