Car hire in Slovakia means you can venture beyond historic Bratislava and discover the other hidden gems of this Eastern European nation. Take note of a few important driving rules before you go:

  • Drive on the right.

  • Speed limits range from 50 km/h in built-up areas to 90 km/h on the open road and 130 km/h on motorways.

  • You will need a vignette (toll sticker) to drive on the highways of Slovakia. These are available from post offices and fuel stations.

  • The legal blood/alcohol limit for drivers is zero.

  • Mobile phone use is banned while driving.

  • Driving between the north and south of Slovakia, you will encounter several mountain roads that can become very problematic in winter. Avoid the mountain roads of Donovaly (Ruzomberok – Banska Bystrica), Velky Sturec (Martin – Banska Bystrica) and Certovica (Liptovsky Mikulás – Brezno) in winter, if possible.

  • Drive with dipped headlights all year.

  • Seat belt use is compulsory.

  • Children under 12/1.5m are not allowed in the front seat.
