World’s Most Bizarre Driving Laws

chickenHire a car in any country in the world and you will come across some pretty wacky driving laws.  Everybody knows the basics:  Stop at red lights. Don’t break the speed limit.  Allow pedestrians to cross at designated areas.  But hidden among the eminently sensible regulations in many law books are some driving rules that are inexplicably strange.  We’ve gathered together some of the more peculiar ones – just in case you ever feel the urge to go whale hunting while driving in Tennessee…

  1. In Connecticut & Tennessee, hunting from cars is illegal, unless it’s whale hunting.

  1. In Pennsylvania, any motorist who sights a team of horses coming toward him must pull well off the road, cover his car with a blanket or canvas that blends with the countryside, and let the horses pass.  If the horses appear skittish, the motorist must dismantle his car and hide it under the nearest bushes.

  1. Motorists driving on country roads in Pennsylvania at night must stop every mile to send up a rocket signal and wait ten minutes for any livestock to clear before continuing.

  1. In Glendale, California, it is illegal to leap from a car travelling at 65mph.

  1. In London, England, it is illegal to flag down a taxi cab if you have the plague.

  1. In Denmark, it is a legal requirement to check under your car before getting in to check whether there any sleeping children underneath.

  1. It is okay to drive a sleigh drawn by a horse or other animal on an Ontario highway, but it must have at least two bells attached to the harness.

  1. If your car breaks down in the middle of the street in Detroit, Michigan, you are not allowed to read a newspaper.

  1. In Galveston, Texas, it is illegal to drive within an arm’s length of alcohol. That includes alcohol in another person’s bloodstream.

  1. You are not allowed to tie your dog to the roof of your car in Alaska.

  1. When driving on the sidewalk in Oregon, you must give way to pedestrians.

  1. In Georgia, Marietta, it is against the law to spit from a car or a bus, but you may spit from a truck

  1. Motorists approaching the intersection of Douglas and Broadway in Wichita, Kansas, must get out of their vehicles and fire three shotgun rounds into the air.

  1. In Youngstown, Ohio, it is illegal to ride on the roof of a taxi.

  1. A woman driving a car in Memphis, Tennessee, must have a man walking/running in front of the vehicle waving a red flag to warn approaching traffic.

  1. You cannot drive in a graveyard in North Carolina unless you are going to dig a grave or bury somebody.

  1. Helsinki in Finland bases speeding tickets on the offender’s annual income, so Anssi Vanjoki, a senior executive at Nokia, was fined $103,600 for driving his Harley-Davidson motorbike at 75 km/h (47 mph) in a 50km/h (31 mph) zone.  This is believed to be the highest speeding fine ever imposed.

  1. It is illegal to clean one’s car with used underwear in San Francisco.

  1. Your licence may be revoked in Greece if you appear poorly dressed or unwashed while driving.

  1. It is illegal for a chicken to cross the road in Quitman, Georgia.
